BSC Boats at the Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta
February 10, 2015
The Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta is to be held on Lake Macquarie over the weekend of 21-22 February 2015. It comprises 3 races run concurrently – a one lap dash, a 12 hour race and the main event, a 24 hour race around the Lake.
At this stage there are 3 Balmain boats entered for the regatta with funds going to the NSW Cancer Council to help cancer patients. The boats entered so far are Michael Meehan's Play On, Chris Durman & Mike Ewings’ Kelly2 and Lindsay Fletcher’s Dream Weaver.
We are advised by RMYC Toronto that the channel into Lake Macquarie has undergone significant dredging and is now 3.5m deep, so maybe some of our Club’s larger yachts may consider participating this year?
BSC has supported and participated in this event for many years. In the last event in 2013 the Balmain Sailing Club team of 3 yachts were the winning team. Perhaps more importantly, through the generous support of our many friends, relatives and business colleagues, our team members raised well over $5,000 and Dream Weaver won the trophy as Best Fundraiser by a significant margin. It is these titles that we are most keen to defend as our primary aim in taking on the Regatta is to raise funds to fight this insidious disease. Both Dream Weaver and Kelly2 have set up supporters pages to raise funds for the charity.
Did you know that according to statistics provided by the Australian Government (Cancer Australia):
· In 2010, the five most commonly diagnosed cancers in Australia were prostate cancer (19,821 cases), bowel cancer (14,860 cases), breast cancer (14,308 cases), melanoma (11,405 cases) and lung cancer (10,296 cases).
· In 2011, the leading cause of cancer death was lung cancer (8,114), followed by bowel cancer (3,999), prostate cancer (3,294), breast cancer (2,937) and pancreatic cancer (2,416).
Cancer has prematurely claimed the lives of many people and has directly touched many BSC families. Help us to help the Cancer Council fight this dreadful disease by supporting Dream Weaver and or Kelly2’’s entry in the Charity Regatta. All donations are fully tax deductable and, more importantly, your support may assist a loved one to be able to say “Heaven Can Wait”!

Additionally, there are crew positions still available on the Team’s yachts. If members are interested in some exiting sailing and gaining some night sailing experience please contact Lindsay Fletcher or Chris Durman.
Thanks in anticipation,
The BSC Heaven Can Wait Team
