THE BALMAIN SAILING CLUB

Introduction

The original Balmain Sailing Club was formed in October 1885. This was era of the wonderfully overcanvassed open boats that varied in length from the 22 footers down to the impossibly proportioned six footers - the hull was six foot wide and six foot long, but they were 22 foot from the tip of their bow-sprit to the end off the boom!

The eighteen foot open boats were the forerunners of thrilling eighteen foot skiffs that skim the surface of the Harbour today, and have ultimately led to the Olympic Class 49ers.

The story of the development of the Club, the heady days and wildly popular events, is best told elsewhere.

The Balmain Sailing Club was re-established in 1995 after a period of little activity- BSC is a friendly community based sailing club with active training, racing, cruising and social programs. The emphasis is on fun; providing friendly competition in a social atmosphere.

Membership is around 500 and is currently open - a membership form is included in this booklet, so feel free to encourage relatives and friends to Join

GENERAL

The Balmain Sailing Club currently races two fleets, a keelboat fleet and a dinghy fleet. The keelboat fleet races as a single division (A) on Sundays, and as three divisions (A, B & C) in the Friday Twilight Series. The dinghy fleet races in one division (1).

The Sailing Committee will form subsequent divisions of the fleet according to fleet size, safety considerations, or to ensure reasonable competition.

References to Divisions A ,B & C and Division I in these Sailing Instructions apply to subsequently formed divisions.

RACE ENTRY PROCEDURE

Entrants will lodge a completed Race Entry Form with the Sailing Office at the Balmain Sailing Club, accompanied by the appropriate entry fee. The listed Entry Fees are conditional on either:

• A completed Race Entry Form and payment being lodged with the Sailing 0ffice prior to the race; or

• The Sailing Office being notified of a boat's intention to race, by phone or fax, prior to

the race - and payment is received on the day of the race.

Entries that fail to comply will be defined as Late Entries.

Late Entries will be accepted subject to payment of a late fee of an additional five dollars.

Boat Registration

Payment of series or annual fees constitutes notification of entry and an intention to race, however all series and annual entrants are required to display legible sail numbers or insignia, a BSC burgee and be skipperd and crowed by current Y.A. members.

While the Sailing Office will be open on race days two hours before the advertised starting time (one hour for twilight races), you can register your intention to race at any time. When you ring around to gather your crew, ring the club as well and leave a message!

As a courtesy to the Starter, series entrants are requested to register their intention to race with the Sailing Office (9810 2086) before the start of each race.
